Out of Touch, Out of Town

My apologies for the silence. We were busy preparing for the release party for The Fall at Eagle Eye Book Shop in Atlanta. It turned out to be the best-attended book event I've ever done, in spite of the rainy weather. The next day, I was off to Arizona for the Tucson Festival of Books, a fantastic weekend on the University of Arizona campus. Writing Sex Scenes was a huge success; had them sitting - and then rolling - in the aisles. Next up is this Friday at 7:30 pm at Bound to Be Read Books in East Atlanta. Then on Saturday, a workshop on "The Pitch" in the Reading Room at Eagle Eye Book Shop. Finally, I'll be at the Spring Book Show at the Cobb Galleria in Marietta, Georgia, on Friday, March 26th at 2 pm for a talk on new models in the publishing world. Then, perhaps, a break? Keep sailing.

Is The Fall self-published?
It is not.
Self-publishing requires that the author pay for publication. I have not done so. I haven't spent a dime of my own money toward the cost of publication. In fact, I spent a lot of the invested funds on new clothes and cool gadgets.
I'm kidding, okay?
The publication of The Fall is being paid for in its entirety by the investors in The First Book Project under the auspices of Five Stones Press.
So there.

With the coming release of The Fall, I have several events on the schedule, one in Tucson and the others in and around Atlanta. The launch event for the book will be at Eagle Eye Book Store in Decatur, GA on Friday, March 12th. On Saturday and Sunday, March 13th and 14th, I'll be appearing at the Tuscon Festival of Books in lovely Arizona. On Friday, March 19th, I'll be at Bound to Be Read Books in East Atlanta for a release party. On Friday and Saturday, March 24th and 25th, I'll be at the Spring Book Show in Marietta, GA. My Kindle Experience

Yesterday, I had a unique Kindle experience during lunch at the Porter in Atlanta's Little Five Points. Jim Milles from Suny Buffalo had a Kindle in his bag and before my very eyes, bought and downloaded Chasing the Devil's Tail. It was a first. This book and The Dying Crapshooter's Blues are currently available as e-books and the others are on the way.

A gray Sunday morning is prime for working, so I'm jotting only a quick note. My career and the career of Five Stones Press are both laid out in detail at my website (www.davidfulmer.com) and at Five Stones (www.fivestonesllc.com) Each is updated about once a week.
Within the next 24 hours, I'll be announcing the artist who will be doing the cover for "The Fall." Hint: there's a Grammy connection.
One last word. I recommend Pandora (www.pandora.com) for writers who benefit from a soundtrack. I do a mix of classical (other than symphonic), jazz in the Bill Evans-George Shearing-Oscar Peterson vein, and Latin from below the Equator.

A Change for a Class Act

Susan Larson, the book editor at The Times Picayune in New Orleans, is retiring from her post at the paper. Susan is regarded as a class act throughout the book world and will be missed. I understand she might be venturing into her own book project(s)and I wish her beyond well in that -- and everything else.

Why We Did It

We started Five Stones Press as a response to what was happening to me and to other authors with solid resumes of reviews, nominations, and awards, but who didn't achieve stellar sales. In my case, I got hit by the perfect storm of my contract with Harcourt ending, the Harcourt-Houghton Mifflin merger (which cast a number of worthy talents out the window), and the decline in the economy overall. I decided I didn't want to leave my career totally in the hands of a New York publishing world that is in flux, and so I partnered with two savvy friends to sell shares in my next book, "The Fall," which will be released March 15th.
